1. What led you to pursue a career in the mental health field?
Jerald Tisdale: I always knew that I wanted to help others in some form. I initially started perusing a major in special education. But after doing some community service work during my junior year of college I realized that I want to help people on a deeper level. Knowing that I had the right people in my life at a young age to get me to where I am today, I too want to be that person for someone. Also, while growing up seeing my mother struggle with her mental health and not really getting the help she needed made me attracted to becoming a counselor.
2. Why does mental health matter to you?
JT: Our mental health impacts us in so many ways on so many levels that some do not even realize. Part of living a balanced life is making sure your mental health is stable and healthy.
3. What are some areas that you specialize in?
JT: I specialize in working with adolescents and young adults that struggle with the challenges’ that life often times presents ranging but not limited to: self esteem issues, addiction, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, sport performance, and sexual identity or orientation struggles.
4. In your experience, what are some of the benefits of counseling? What are some of the challenges?
JT: Some of the benefits in counseling are being able to talk to someone who understands you or at least is willing to understand you and be a space where you can be authentic without judgement. One can also gain the opportunity to find purpose in their life and become the best version of themselves. Some of the challenges are people allowing fear or judgment keep them from getting to that space of authenticity and freedom. Also, the commitment one must be willing to have to do the work.
5. What are some good things to know when looking for a therapist?
JT: Make sure what they are offering speaks directly to you and your situation. Always ask questions to make sure they are a fit for you.
6. Any recommendations on ways to protect your mental health during this difficult time we are in?
JT: Make sure you are taking care of yourself mentally, physically, and spiritually. Connect with as many people that you can safely. Quit watching so much of what the media is putting out there.
7. How can someone reach out to you about making an appointment for a session?
JT: Go to my Psychology Today Jerald “JT” Tisdale where you can find my contact info or just email me at jtisdale1309@gmail.com. I will have a live website coming in the next month.
